Drinking Water

[ Abe-h Khordan ]

Good drinking water is a scarce commodity in Iran. I was 10 years old in 1949 when Shiraz first had a municipal water system. Before then, spring water was brought in giant leather sacs, carried on the back of mules to the middle class families. The rich had their own private wells, from which the servants filled covered pools.

And the comfortable could also afford to drink carbonated soft drinks such as Coca Cola, which became a big business not long after it arrived in Iran.

The lower class got their drinking water from a public water house. They used different containers: ceramic, leather bags, or copper.

However the water in Shiraz was not pure. Many of the children suffered from a skin disease contracted from contaminated water. There was no cure at that time and when it was finally eradicated we were left with ugly scars.

I remember people had different ways of getting their water. For instance, some families got drinking water from a deep well at home.

Some others got the drinking water from the public water-house. This government stored the water there.

A water carrier, usually a man, delivered drinking water from the water-house to homes in a very large, leathern container.

There was a less expensive, surface water-house. A carrier delivered water in copper containers to homes.

The water man would fill my grandmother’s water container which was a large, jug-like cistern. It was made of clay by a potter and it had a faucet.

In my grandmas’ home my younger sister and I liked to fetch water from the cistern usually by the servants. We used a small leather container that we chilled in the cool breeze.
