The Persian Master Bedroom

[ Otag-eh khabeh Voladane ]

My parents’ bedroom was very private and therefore a source of curiosity to me and my six siblings. During our teenage years, we talked about the secrecy of that room.

That curiosity led us to learn about sex and sexual relationships. But there was a big question in our minds: If the bedroom was so private, what happened in poor families where the entire family slept in one room?

Cushions and blankets on the floor were used for sitting. Since women must look pretty, the cosmetics box, mirror, and perfume also were located on the floor.

Women in Iran still like to use make-up even when they don’t need it.

At that time my parents slept on the floor which was carpeted with Persian rugs from Kerman. The harmony of colors was considered carefully. Turquoise is a royal color that they liked to use for their bedroom. Perhaps in this way my mother could feel regal.

A crystal chandelier was another sign of prestige and beauty. Flowers made out of plaster were used to decorate the walls and ceiling. It was molded, carved, and painted in a wide variety of ways.

The top of the fireplace was decorated with antique vases and covered with the hand-made fabrics, such as Termeh; or the fabric Makhmal, which was decorated with traditional Persian embroidery. The fireplace was made as a work of art by molding and carving to decorate the room.

Books were everywhere but children were not allowed to touch them. The books were collections of poems from famous poets or about spiritually. The first book that we had was a school book. No other books were published specifically for children.

The best investment for women in our culture is jewelry and gold accessories. Woman receive golden wedding gifts. Culturally it makes the women’s situation strong.
